The Drainage Basin
- A drainage basin or catchment area is an area of land drained by a river and its tributaries.
- Its boundary which is always an area of higher land otherwise known as a Watershed.
- The Mississipi's drainage basin covers over 1/3 of the USA.
Key Words
Precipitation-This includes rainfall, snow, sleet and hail.
Interception by vegetation- When it rains, most water are intercepted by trees and plants. For example if the rains falls as a short, light shower then little water will reach the ground and the water will be stored on leaves and then lost through evaporation.
