Guilty = sentenced + punishment/treatment or both + e.g. deterent

Zero tolerance - aims to reduce the amount of criminals reoffending and also as a deterent

+ strength for the idea that punishment can be effective as a deterent - BUIKHUISEN - Dutch feild experiment - police told citizens that people with worn tyres would be punished - more people replaced their worn tyers than in a control city - punishment can be used as a deterent when based on vicarious learning

- Punishment based on retribution is not ethical as it does not give the offender a chance to change - unless punishment aims to rehabilitate, thus involoves treatment - SKINNER - people work harder and learn more quickly when being rewarded for dong something right than when punished for doing something wrong - shows treating and rehabillitating offenders is better than just punishing them - treatments show offenders what they should do

SKINNER - token economy treatments - beh. approach - rewards non criminal an non aggressive beh rarther than antisocial beh. - tokens and praise are given immediatly and consistently following positive beh. such as courtesy, sticking to the rules and eing sociable - tokens cashed for food, trips ect. - Wakefield prison violent inmates are rewarded for playing 30 minutes or team games which they can cash in for cigarettes - Grayling has announced he is in favour of these systems based on rewards - wants prisoners to wear a uniform (no privileges)

+ HOBBS - young male offenders living in three or four "cottages" recieved TET - in TET coteges beh. such as cooperation and non violence were rewarded with tokens which could be exchanged for privileges such as sweets or home passes - HOBBS found that the…
