Why did Labour win the 1929 Election?
LABOUR STRENGTHS
- Proved themselves in 1924, passing legislation on housing, education and social insurance despite being a minority government.
- MacDonald's public condemnation of the 1926 General Strike persuaded those who supported/ were members of the TUC to switch their suport to Labour.
- Labour campaigned to attract flapper vote after women aged 21+ were voting for the first time and informed the public to vote positively.
CONSERVATIVE WEAKNESSES
- Relied on the popularity of Stanley Baldwin and portrayed him as 'the man you can trust' giving an image of complacency to the party.
- Used the slogan 'safety first' which was unsucessful…
