· Due to the announcement of the marriage treaty and the nobilities fear of Catholicism
· Led by Sir Thomas Wyatt, who did not want Mary to marry a foreigner in fear the government would be taken over by foreigners. Also led by Sir Peter Carew from Devon, Sir James Croft from Hertfordshire and the Duke of Suffolk.
· The conspirators planned to remove Mary and instate Queen Elizabeth and arrange for her to marry Edward Courtenay
