- a yarn is defined as being a fine continuous length of fibres
- it can be with or without twist
- created in a process called spinning
- the thickness of a yarn and the tightness can affect a fabric's weight, texture, handle and appearance
TWIST:
- a twist is inserted into a yarn during spinning to make it stronger so they are suitable for knitting or weaving
- can be spun clockwise (Z twist) or anti-clockwise (S twist)
- the twist level is the number of twists per metre and twist is a deciding factor for the end use
- LOW TWIST; yarns are softer, weaker and more bulky making them suitable for knitting weft yarns
- HIGH TWIST; means the yarns are stronger, harder…
