• within this number there has been an increase in the numbers and the proportion of remarriages
• there has been an increase in single-hood
• there has been a large increase in cohibitation from the 1970s onwards
• cohabitation before marriage is now the Norm
• while some see as it as a prelude to marriage others see it as an alternative
