what is attachment
a two way emotional bond between an infant and caregiver that develops over time

why do we make attachments
for survival :
- infants receive warmth, food and protection
- care-givers genes gets passed on

secure base behaviour( is the caregiver close to baby)

when one person causes another to respond

care-giver and infant reflect the same actions and emotions in a coordinated way at the same tine

ROLE OF THE FATHER
primary attachment is usually made with the mother
Schaffer and Emerson (1964) found that the majority of babies became attached to their mother first at around 7 months
( in only 3% of cases the father was the first sole object of attachment)

fathers have a distinct but vital role
Grossman et al (2002) carries out a longitudinal study looking at parents behaviour and its relationship to the quality of children's attachment into their teens

Feild (1978)
filmed 4 month old babies during their face to face interactions with primary caregiver mother , secondary caregiver father and primary caregiver father .

feild founding
found that:
- primary mother has high interactional synchrony
- secondary father has low IS
- primary F has high IS
fathers can also be PCG. its no the gender but the level of sensitive responsiveness that determines the level of attachment
