prejudice
To pre-judge somethng or someone based on opinion or attitiudes that a person holds towards other people or groups.

This is when we use our prejudices and act upon them to treat a person or group of people differently either favourably or unfavourably.

An expectation of what is acceptable and unacceptable within a culture.

attitudes
These are made up of our values and beliefs that we develop from early child hood and influence our social interactions with people and behaviour within society.

stereotype
a generalised image or idea which is applied to an individual or a group. they are based on limited and inaccurate information and are embedded into society.

direct discrimination
Deliberatly disadvantaging an individual, obvious by the words or actions. e.g. refusing to consider a black women for a job even though they have relevent experience and qualifications.

Indirect discrimination
less obvious, occurs when certain conditions are in place that demonstrates preference for some people over others. e.g. a job vacansie requires the person to show a drivers licence as they will need to be able to drive for the job.

empowerment
This is when we give individuals the maximum available choice when making decisions about their lives.

Disempowerment
This can happen if they are given a lack of information, lack of money or have a fear of the consequences.

Socialisation
This is the process in which young children learn the cultural values and norms of society.

Primary socialisation
learning, which comes primarily from parents acting as role models

Secondary socialisation
The process in which a child comes to understand the social norms of a wider society. Through the media, enviroment, peers, education, work etc.

social exclusion
the failure of society to provide certain individuals and groups with those rights and benefits normally available to its members, such as employment, adequate housing, health care, education etc.

self concept
how someone thinks about or perceives themselves.

Self esteem
person's overall emotional evaluation of his or her own worth. It is a judgment of oneself as well as an attitude.
