A catalyst is a substance which increases the spped of a reaction, without being changed or used up in the reaction.

What are enzymes used for?
Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up the useful chemical reactions in the body.
2 of 5
What are enzymes made of?
Enzymes are proteins so are made of chains of amino acids. They also act as structural components of tissues, hormones and antibodies.
3 of 5
Why don't enzymes change their shape?
Every enzyme has a uniqu shape that fits onto the substance involved in the reaction. They usually only catalyse one reaction. This is because for an enzyme to work, the substance has to fit a special shape.
4 of 5
What conditions do enzymes work best at?
Enzymes work best at 37 degrees celcius and at pH 7. If this changes, the rate of reaction will change.
