What does QTL stand for?
Quantitative Trait Loci- genes that together determine a complex character

what are the practical uses of QTL mapping?
1) Plant and animal breeding: a) Marker Assisted Selection (MAS) b) Introgression breeding c) Screening individuals at an early age 2) Conservation genetics 3) Genome wide association studies: finding genes involved in complex traits (diseases)

what is the candidate gene approach?
conducting genetic association studies focused on associations between genetic variation within pre-specified genes of interest and phenotypes or disease states- as opposed to scanning the whole genome for genetic variation

what is composite interval mapping?
an approach to QTL mapping for populations derived from bi-parental crosses

what do SNPs predict?
skin, hair and eye colour
