Name the components of a balanced diet ?
Carbohydrates, Proteins, Fats, Vitamins, Minerals, Fibre and Water
1 of 37
Why does your body need Carbohydrates?
To give your body required energy
2 of 37
Why does your body need fats?
To provide insulation and as an energy store
3 of 37
Why does your body need protein?
For growth and repair
4 of 37
Why does your body need vitamins and minerals ?
To enable your body to work healthily and prevent deficiency disease.
5 of 37
Name two side effects of over eating ?
Type 2 diabetes/ high cholesterol/ high blood pressure/ over weight/ arthritis
6 of 37
Describe how daily exercise help a person to lose mass?
Increases metabolic rate/ gives more energy/ energy comes from the food/ less energy gets converted to fat
7 of 37
What is metabolic rate ?
The rate at which chemical reaction happen in our cells.
8 of 37
Why do men have a higher metabolic rate ?
Men have a higher proportion of muscle to fat than women
9 of 37
Describe two factors that affect metabolic rate?
Amount of physical activity/ the proportion to muscle to fat in our body
10 of 37
Give two inherited factors that can effect our health?
metabolic rate/ cholesterol level
11 of 37
When does a person become overweight?
When the energy content of the food is more than the energy used in daily life.
12 of 37
4 health problems linked to obesity?
Arthritis/ type 2 diabetes/ high blood pressure/ heart disease
13 of 37
State two ways a person can lose mass ?
Reduce the amount of energy by reducing the amount of intake/ increase the amount of exercise thus using up more energy.
14 of 37
how does exercise make a person healthier?
increase the amount of energy used up by the body/ increase the muscle proportion to the fat proportion
15 of 37
Define malnourished?
Lack of a balanced diet
16 of 37
Why do you need cholesterol in your body?
To form our cell membranes/ to make important hormones
17 of 37
What are the risks of eating a diet rich in fat?
high cholesterol levels/ increased risk of heart disease.
18 of 37
What are pathogens?
organisms that cause disease
19 of 37
Name two pathogens ?
virus/ bacteria
20 of 37
How do virus cause illness?
viruses enter the body cells and damages the cells
21 of 37
How do bacteria cause illness
by producing toxins and damages the cell
22 of 37
Give two reasons why pathogens make us feel ill?
Pathogens produce toxins/ they damage the cell
23 of 37
How do WHITE BLOOD CELLS protect us against pathogens?
Produce antibodies/ produces anti toxins/ engulfs pathogens.
24 of 37
What is an antibody?
These are the substances made by white blood cells to kill pathogens
25 of 37
What is a pandemic ?
A disease affecting people in many countries.
26 of 37
What is an antibiotic?
A medicine used to get rid of bacteria
27 of 37
Why will antibiotic not get rid of the flu?
They only kill bacteria
28 of 37
What medicine will relieve symptoms of flu?
Painkillers
29 of 37
One reason why antibiotics should not be overused ?
might speed up the development of resistant strains of bacteria
30 of 37
Describe how the antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria develop?
There exists a variation in the bacteria population. Most bacteria are killed by antibiotics by some survive. Breed and produce more resistant bacteria.
31 of 37
Why are MRSA strains so difficult to treat?
MRSA strains are resistant to antibiotics
32 of 37
What is a vaccine ?
Vaccine contains the dead/ inactive form of the pathogen.
33 of 37
How does a vaccination make a person immune to a disease
The inactive pathogen is injected into the body. It stimulates the white blood cells to produce antibodies. the pathogen is killed by the antibodies. If a person is later infected than they have the pathogens to kill the disease quickly.
34 of 37
One advantage of vaccinated a larger proportion of the population against a disease?
In reduces the spread of infection
35 of 37
What does the MMR vaccine protect people against?
Measles/ Mumps/ Rubella
36 of 37
Describe the aseptic techniques used to grow micro-organisms?
Sterilise petri dish that is used to grow micro-organisms. Nutrient agar that provides food must be sterilised. Inoculate the agar with the micro-organisms you want to grow. Seal the petri dish and incubate at 25 degrees.
