How could the building of homes affect the environment?
The building of homes destroy parts of the natural environment
1 of 24
As humans produce food on a large scale, how does this affect the environment?
Humans produce food on a large scale which means the natural environment has to be changed to favour the animals and plants we eat.
2 of 24
How does the huge population of humans affect the environment?
The huge population of humans mean the natural habitat has been destroyed
3 of 24
What is intensive farming?
Intensive farming if farming that uses small space as possible
4 of 24
What does intensive farming include?
They involve the use of fertilisers, pesticides, disease control and battery methods
5 of 24
What are fertilisers used for?
Fertilisers increases the yield of the crop
6 of 24
What is the disadvantage of using fertiliser?
By using fertiliser it can wash out of the soil and pollute rivers and streams
7 of 24
What are Pesticides used for?
Pesticides are used to prevent pests from eating or competing with crop so this increases the growth of yield
8 of 24
What are the disadvantages of using Pesticides?
Pesticides can destroy non-pest organisms and chemicals can stay in the crop which will then be eaten by humans.
9 of 24
What are disease control used for?
Disease control prevents the loss of animals or crop to disease
10 of 24
What is the disadvantage of using disease control?
By using disease control the antibiotics given to the animals may remain in the meat when its eaten by humans.
11 of 24
What are battery methods used for?
Battery methods are used so more animals can be kept in a given space meaning animals will use less energy so they will need less food which reduces the food costs and the meat can be sold on more cheaply
12 of 24
What is the disadvantage of using the battery method?
By using the battery method the animals quality of life is very poor which may affect the sale of the meat with customers disagreement
13 of 24
How can sewage and fertilisers affect the environment?
Sewage and fertilisers can affect the environment as when its used on farm land it can drain into rivers and streams
14 of 24
How can chemicals from factories affect the environment?
Chemicals from factories or an industrial site can get into a river
15 of 24
How can warm water from factories affect the environment?
Warm water used for machinery in factories sites can get into rivers causing increased growth in bacteria
16 of 24
What does bacteria feed on?
Bacteria feeds on sewage or dead organisms which uses up the available oxygen
17 of 24
Some chemicals poison living organisms eventually killing them what does this lead to?
When the animals have died due to the poisoning of chemicals, this will cause the level of bacteria to rise when feeding on the dead organisms causing the oxygen levels to fall
18 of 24
What can acid rain leach from soil and into the rivers?
Acid rain can leach aluminium from the soil and into rivers
19 of 24
What effects does this cause?
Aluminium is poisonous to animals which live in the water which means they will die and there will be an increase of the bacteria levels.
20 of 24
Some species need clean air and water to survive however some animals can live in polluted areas why can't the polluted species compete against the other species?
The polluted species are not receiving the nutrients in which they need whereas the species which live in the clean areas live in healthy environments.
21 of 24
Scientists can count the number of indicator species in an area to indicate what?
Scientists can count the number of different indicator species in an area to get an idea of how polluted the area is.
22 of 24
Why do scientist monitor the levels of oxygen in the water or the amount of bacteria in the water?
To measure the levels of oxygen and to evaluate the pollution within the area
23 of 24
What are mathematical models used for?
Mathematical models are used to measure , analyse and predict future effects
