Explain the causes of bowel cancer
Cells divide and multiply too quickly and created a tumor. Bowel cancer usually develops in the polyps on the inner lining of the bowel. Exact cause is unknown.

Blood in stools or bleeding from the rectum, change in normal bowel movements, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss

When deciding what treatment is best for the patient what will the doctors consider?
Type & size of cancer, general health of the patient, if cancer has spread or not, what grade it is

Give 4 treatments
Surgery, chemo, radiotherapy, biological therapy

If the cancer is confined to the rectum what treatment is used?
Radiotherapy to shrink the tumor then surgery

What is chemo radiation?
Chemo and radiotherapy used together

If patient has stage 1 bowel cancer what treatment will they get?
Should be possible to remove the tumor without further treatment

Treatment for stages 3 & 4 bowel cancer
Surgery to remove the cancer and possibly the surrounding lymph nodes then a course of chemo to prevent the cancer coming back

Give the treatment for stage 4 cancer
Usually not able to cure. Symptoms can be controlled & the spread of cancer can be slowed down by medical intervensions.

Explain the diet changes patients will make after surgery
If part of colon has been removed they'll have to eat more fiber to lesses effects of constipation & drink lots of water. Eat less red meat and eat more fish. Try to avoid cured meats.

Will they have to make any exercise changes?
If they have a stoma they should not overdo themselves and must rest after exercise

Give 4 physical impacts of having bowel cancer
Blood in stools, surgery and recovery may impair activities of the patient, may have to have a stoma, some may have to have a permanent stoma.

Give an intellectual impact
May be unable to study, work or read because of a lack of concentration

Give 3 emotional impacts
Mood/ body image may be affected, worry about how people will react, may feel low & need osme support and councelling
