Define Bronchiectasis
Characterised by irreversible widening of medium to small airways, with inflammation, chronic bacterial infection and destruction of bronchial walls

-Commonly long-term complication of previous lower respiratory infections (pneumonia)
-Foreign body inhalation and allergic/autoimmune (asoc with RA)
-Underlying congenital disorders such as cystic fibrosis

Discuss the clinical signs and symptoms
-Daily cough occurs over months/years
-Daily production large v of sputum
-SOB and wheezing
-Chest pain
-Clubbing

Discuss prognosis
-Chronic condition, frequent relapses of varying severity. Long-term prognosis = variable > data on morbidity + mortality = sparse
-Frequently co-exists with other respiratory diseases > difficult to distinguish disease alone

-Recurrent pneumonia requiring hospitalisation, empyema, lung abscess, progressive resp. failure

What are the aims of intervention?
-Alleviate symptoms to reduce morbidity and mortality with minimal adverse effects of treatment

Discuss objective and outcome measures
-Mortality
-Infection rates
-Exacerbation rates
-Symptom severity = sputum v, expectoration rates, haemoptysis
-Functional: lung function = spirometry, exercise tolerance = 6MWT
-Quality of life = ASBC scale
-Hospital admissions
