-offence analysis

what happens in offence analysis?
-offence is analysed to gain insight into motivations (can be challenging as there may be multiple)
-forensic psychologist may look at similar offences by other to see if there are similarities
-but it is idiographic (specific to person)

what happens in understanding the functioning of offending?
-finding what the purpose of the crime is for the offender (fulfilling a craving) Hodge et al 2011
eg. behaviourists perspective - reinforcement and reward, psychodynamic perspective - childhood, family issues etc

what happens in application to treatment?
-psychological formulation is started from looking at mental health problems which could apply to criminals
-ideally need an intervention for the criminal for the offender based on the conclusions drawn
-the rehabilitation programme should reflect start

what should the rehabilitation programme do?
the rehabilitation programme should reflect starting place of the offender, risk of reoffending and how likely they are to stick to programme(their life motivations)

what is the holistic approach?
the idea that the research looks at the whole person not just their mental needs. focuses on their wellness and not just their illness or condition

what are some strengths of case formulation?
-it is an holistic approach
-benefit society as they are able to see what may lead people to commit crimes so they can change

what are some weakness of case formulation?
-bias formulation: as offender is part of the formulation they may lie or may not remember their childhood accurately - lacks validity
-hard to measure success although we can look at reoffending rate

28-year old NZ Maori, heavily tattooed with images that depicted his life long allegiance to a criminal gang

what was the phase 1 section of his case?
His criminal history included 20 convictions for robbery and violence. he also self-reported a pattern of serial rapes which began at 12 (many of these were as part of the gang he was a member of)

what was phase 2 of his case?
clinical interviews revealed he had been brought up in a context of family violence and sexual abuse. this led to his belief that abusing others was 'acceptable' and that **** had only occurred if a victim verbally said 'no'

Mr c completed 100 hours of intensive cognitive-behavioural treatment. he also experienced a 10-week violence prevention programme delivered with the community. Mr C's treatment programme was designed to met the specific factors that caused him to turn to
