Crude Oil - Question and Answer

?
What is Crude Oil?
Crude oil is a mixture of a very large number of compounds.
1 of 8
How is Crude Oil separated?
Crude oil is separated by fractional distillation.
2 of 8
What is fractional distillation?
Fractional distillation is when Crude Oil is separated at different fractions because crude oil is a mixture of different hyrdrocarbons. These hydrocarbons have different chain lengths which leads them to having different boiling and melting points.
3 of 8
What does Crude Oil consist of?
Most of the compounds in crude oil consist of molecules made up of hydrogen and carbon atoms only (hydrocarbons). Most of these are saturated hydrocarbons called alkanes.

What is the formula for alkanes?
CnH2n+2

What is the formula for alkenes?
CnH2n
6 of 8
What are alkanes?
Hydrocarbons that are saturated because they have single bonds.
7 of 8
