Child Language Acquisition Theories

?

Chomsky
Language acquisition is innate. Children have an LAD which allows them to take in grammatical rules of spoken language
2 of 7
Piaget
At first the child is egocentric. At 18 months they learn object permanence (things can exist when they don't see them). Then the child learn abstract concepts
3 of 7
Bruner
Children have an LASS where caregivers support the child's linguistic development in social situations. The caregiver creates a conversation and encourage a response e.g. tag questions

Lenneberg
Critical Period (0-2 years old) - if the child has not acquired langage by this time, it's unlikely they will in the future
5 of 7
Vygotsky
a.) Private speech - the child talks aloud to itself b.) Zone of Proximal Development - the caregiver may answer for the child. This is known as scaffolding
6 of 7
Berko
The 'Wug' test - a test that showed that children understood that adding 's' makes a word plural. This is called internalisation (they'd heard the rule before and so applied it)
