Coding, Capacity and Duration of Memory.

?
What was Baddeley's study?
Coding of STM and LTM and involved repeating acoustically similar and semantically similar words in order after being shown.
1 of 11
What were the findings of Baddeley's study?
Immediate recall of acoustically similar words was difficult = STM is coded acoustically.
Recalling words that were semantically similar after 20 mins was difficult = LTM is coded semantically.
2 of 11
What was Jacob's study?
Capacity of STM and involved a researcher reading 4 letters out and the participant had to repeat the numbers back in order.
3 of 11
What were the findings of Jacob's study?
On average participants could recall 9.3 digits and 7.3 letters correctly.
4 of 11
What was Miller's study?
Capacity of STM. Miller noted that things in everyday life came in 7s.
5 of 11
What were the findings of Miller's study?
Span of the STM is about 7 (plus or minus 2) but can be improved by chunking (grouping things together).
6 of 11
What was Peterson and Peterson's study?
Duration of STM. 24 Students were given 3 letters to remember (e.g. YGH) and a 3 digit number to count backwards from for 3,6,9,12,15 or 18 seconds.
7 of 11
What were the findings of Peterson and Peterson's study?
Students recalled the letters 80% of the time on average after 3 seconds.
After 18 seconds average recall went down to 3% suggesting duration of STM is about 18-30 secs.
8 of 11
What was Bahrick's study?
Duration of LTM. High school gradates asked to recognise classmates form yearbook photos. Also a free recall test where they had to name people from their graduating class.
9 of 11
What were the findings of Bahrick's study?
Participants tested after 48 years of graduation were about 70% accurate. Free recall was less accurate.
10 of 11
Name 3 Evaluation points for Coding, Capacity and Duration of Memory.
Any 3 from:
Bahrick's study - High external validity (used meaningful material (high school classmates photos))
Jacob's study - Conducted a long time ago
Baddeley's study - Didn't use meaningful material
Peterson and Peterson's study - Use of artificial s
