Study of people's mental abilities and how these guide/influence their behaviours. Interested in how we aquire, organise, remember and use information to guide behaviour.
2 of 10
Cognitive Perspection cont.
Cannot see/observe perception, memory, stress but have insight into mental processes by observing and studying behaviour.
3 of 10
Models.
Develops models that represent the mental process from research conducted. These are: Model of Memory, Model of Stress, Model of Emotion and Model for Speech- translation and production.
4 of 10
Scientific Methodology.
Need to support observations with objective data. With this information they can explain behaviour, predict behaviour and xhange/control behaviour.
5 of 10
Stage Theorists.
Suggests the individual develops their 'cognitive ability' as they progress through different stages (Piaget, Bruner, Vygotsky). Success will depend on the quality of the experiences through the stages and how successful the outcomes at the end.
6 of 10
Stage Theorists cont.
Develop patterns of thought and behaviour (schemas).Schemas develop by the processes of assimilation (new experiences incorperated into exisitng schemas) and accommodation (creating a new schema is a new experience cannot be assimilated).
7 of 10
Schema.
A blueprint for behaviour and thought. It guides your behaviour and thought processes, reducing the amount of time and energy that you have to donate to cognition (thinking).
8 of 10
Computer Analogy.
Considers the individual and their ability to process information in terms of a computer and how it works. It compares a computer and its electrical system to the brain/mind and the central nervous system.
9 of 10
Explanation for behaviour.
Behaviour is the result of cognitive processing, which is the ability to acquire, organise, remember and use knowledge to guide behaviour.
