Midterm elections
Voters choose 1/3 of senators and every member of house of representatives. Determine which party will control each chamber of congress for next two years. Party who controls chamber, controls legislative votes.

US House of Representatives
Serve two years term. 435 members get elected every midterm and presidential election year. Each representative serves a specific congressional district. Representatives must be at least 25, US citizen for 7 years and live in states represented.

US Senate
Serve 6 years term. 1/3 senators elected during each midterm and each presidential election year. 100 US senators, two from each state. Senator must be at least 30, US citizen for at least 9 years and live In state represented.

State and local elections
Take place in any year at various times throughout the year. statewide elections for governor or state legislature. A city may elect its mayor.

Besides name of ballot, write in names of other candidates. Write in votes for president, US senators and representatives. States demand write in candidates for presidents. 9 states don't allow write in candidates for president.
