Is a criticism of the distinction between positive and negative symptoms. Claridge and Davis found that although they are popularly used the distinction is not helpful to whoever is being assessed.

Type or end state?
Another criticism. Its likely that positive and negative symptoms are just alternative states of the same symptom, rather than a different type of sz. In other words, one symptom progresses and becomes another after time.

Are symptoms exclusive?
Criticism. Hallucinations and most negative symptoms are also symptoms of depression therefore are not exclusive to sz, which means a diagnosis cannot be made of the basis of just these symptoms.

Criticism. Some negative symptoms may be caused by the positive ones as a coping mechanism. Some are also caused by drugs that are there to help sz. So are any of them actual symptoms? or just side effects of something else
