Functionalists
Parsons- argues theres a 'functional fit' between the nuclear family and modern society. It carries out 4 functions; allows for geographical mobility, social mobility, primary socialisation of children, stabilisation of adult personalities.

New Right
Sees the nuclear family as ideal and biologically natural. They are opposed to family diversity. Lone parent families seen as harmful as they are dependant on the welfare system. In favour of marriage as it creates stability when brining up children.

Modern Functionalist (Chester)
Neo-conventional family- a duel earner where both spouses work. Chester believes that little has changed and that the nuclear family are still dominant and the preferred family type.

Postmodernists
Claim that there is no longer a best or dominant family type. Argue individuals shape family structures not the other way around.

Giddens and Beck
The individualisation thesis- the idea that traditional structures like gender, class and family have lost much of their influence over us.

Giddens
Choice and change in 'late modernity'- Individuals are free to choose and change their relationship type without having to follow laws, tradition or social norms. People form relationships to meet their own needs. Contraception- reproduction not key

Beck
Risk in the 'second modernity'- The negotiated family is less stable. There is greater individualism as people now act according to self-interest leading to more selfish behaviour.
