The resulting landforms vary in size from tiny cones to widespread lava flows. Materials injected into the crust are referred to as intrusive.
3 of 6
Igneous
These may later be exposed at the surface by erosion of the overlying rocks. Both extrusive and intrusive materials cooked from magma are known as igneous rocks.
4 of 6
Basaltic Lava
Is formed from magma that is low in silica. This makes for a more fluid magma that allows gas bubbles to expand on the way up to the surface, preventing sudden explosive activity.
5 of 6
Andesitic Lava
Is produced by the process of subduction. It occurs on an island arc or at a destructive plate boundary, where ocean crust is being destroyed.
