Oceanice Crust
Under the ocean is oceanic crust. This is much thinner, usually 6-8km thick. It is denser and made of an igneous rock called basalt.
1 of 15
Continental Crust
Forms the land. Mostly made up of granite. It is on average 30-50km thick.
2 of 15
Mantle
The astherosphere is in the top layer of the mantle. It is mostly solid rock.
3 of 15
Core
The outer core is liquid, it is also dense and metallic. The inner core is a solid, it contains radioactive material and generates heat.
4 of 15
Lithosphere
The uppermost layer of the Earth. It is cool and brittle.
5 of 15
Asthenosphere
In the top layer of the mantle. The tectonic plates move very slowly on this layer.
6 of 15
Convection currents
Bring magma up from the mantle.
7 of 15
Magnetosphere
Earth is surrounded by a huge invisible magnetic field. This is a force field. It protects the Earth from harmful radiation from space and the sun.
8 of 15
Conservative plate boundary
Formed when two plates slide past each other.
9 of 15
Constructive plate boundary
Formed when two plates move apart.
10 of 15
Destructive plate boundary
Formed when two plates collide and oceanic crust is sub ducted under continental crust.
11 of 15
Collision plate boundary
When two continental plates meet and fold up to create mountains.
12 of 15
Focus
The point in the crust where the Earthquake originates.
13 of 15
Epicentre
Point directly above focus on the surface of the crust.
14 of 15
Seismic waves
The waves of energy released by the plates which form the earthquake.
