Shemas are ways we organise and store thoughts and information in our heads which are about ourselves and our world around us.

This is how we process information in our heads. What information do we attend to, what information do we ignore and what information do we remember?

Thoughts that we are aware of.

UNCONCIOUS THOUGHTS
Thoughts that we are not aware of.

ID
The id is present from birth. It contains our basic drives and instincts (e.g our aggression and sex drive). The id seeks pleasure, it is totally immoral (has no sense of what is right and what is wrong). It wants things immediately.

EGO
The ego develops thriugh childhoodas we become socialised. This is the realistic part of our personaility that attempts to control the desires of the id and superego. The ego follows socially acceptable norms, therefore we can't have what we desire.

SUPER EGO
The superego develops around 4. This is our moral conscience. The superego feels guilty when we do something wrong. It always wants to do the right thing.

ATTACHMENT
An emotional tie or a very close relationship between two people. It is a special bond between two people.

SECURE ATTACHMENT
It uses mum as a secure base to explore the room. It often seeks proximity to mother. They become stressed when mum leaves the room but is comforted by her return.

INSECURE AVIODANT ATTACHMENT
The child tends to ignore mother and has no interest in interacting with mum. They show no distress when mum leaves child alone.

INSECURE RESISTANT ATTACHMENT
Intensely seeking proximity towards mother 'clingy behaviour'. They show intense distress when left alone. When mum returns , they reject any comfort and are angry towards her.

BOWLBY'S THEORY OF ATTACHMENT
Bowlby believed that if children are separated from their parents or never make a secure bond with them, they will have problems with making close, trusting and stable relationships with other people later on in life.

INTERNAL WORKING MODEL
This is like a mental idea assumption of how relationships work. The way our parents behave will influence the development of our internal working model.
