What are "speakeasies"?

Got their name because customers had to speak quietly so that they were not discovered. "speak easy please" was what a barman would often say to his noisy guests. Illegal pub.

Bootleggers?

Got its name in the 1600's when British people pay taxes on any alcoholic drink so smugglers used to hide booze in their long leather boots to avoid paying tax.

Moonshine?

A homemade spirit that was sometimes so strong it caused illness, in fact deaths from alcoholic poisining went up from 98, in 1920 to nearly 800 in 1926.

Racketeering?

This was when business and shopkeepers paid money to stop them smashing up their premises.

Lynching?

Lynching is the illegal hanging without a trial. In the down south around the 1920's. Police never stopped it. Many were probably innocent of any crime.

Jim Crows Laws?

"Jim Crow" was an insulting name for a black person. Especially down south, black population was bigger, they passed these laws to keep them separate or segregated. Different pools, libraries, taxis and even blood banks. \voting was hard.

NAACP?

1910- Web Dubois- great grandson of an African slave set up the National Association of Advancement of Coloured People. Work-improve human rights-voting. 1920-politicians failed to introduce suggestions.Around today& has support by pop,film& movie *

"Back To Africa"

Some Africans supported the idea of going home,Africa. Before they were taken as slaves. Marcus Garvey became the leader & is well known for using the phrase"black is beautiful"- pride &self-respect. It failed when Garvey was jailed for fraud.
