Sino-American relations, 1962-72
China realised that isolationism was no longer in their best interests whilst the USA realised they could by bringing China into the global political arena through improved Sino-American relations.

Ostpolotik and the development of European detente
Willy Brandt abandoned the Hallstein Doctrine and West Germany recongnised East Germany for the first time. Brandt also wanted to recognise the Post-War borders, especially the Oder-Neisse border with Poland.

Brandts talks with the Soviet Union led to this being signed. This was a clear example of improved relations with Europe.

The Berlin Agreement, September 1971
An agreement over Berlin would greatly advance East-West detente and both sides were keen to reach a concesus. The USA (Nixon + Kissinger) both hoped that a deal over Berlin would help advance SALT. The Soviet guaranteed Western access.

The Basic Treaty, 1972
Attempt to normalise relations between the two Germanies. Three articles focused on equal rights, human rights and a promise to refrain from using force instead of peaceful coexistence to resolve issues.

The Helsinki Accords, 1973-75
Basket 1: Security in Europe. Basket 2: Economics, Science, Tech + Environment. Basket 3: Humanitarian + Other Fields.

The Soviet Position (CSCE)
They had 3 main interests: to expand Ostpolotik, the decrease borders + encourage trade and to further the process of East-West detente.

The American Position (CSCE)
USA was not fully committed to accepting the political status quo which the Final Act seemed to recognise as a permenant reality. The USA feared the reduction in a need for NATO military support.
Finalising the SALT agreements and expanded American-Soviet cooperation in science + technology, as well as environment + health, as well as space exploration.

The Basic Priniples Agreement
This was based around the attempt to avoid nuclear war and use the process of Peaceful Coexsitence to resolve measures. The main problem was there was no legal basis for the treatment.
