Introduction to Plant Biology

?
What percentage of the worlds plant species are from the rainforest?
50%
1 of 13
How does climate change affect agriculture?
It effects the climate (rate of transpiration, growth etc), nutrient cycles, temperature
2 of 13
Who was Norman Borlaug?
"Father of the green revolution", bread different varieties of crops, created short-stocked wheat plant which used more resources into grain and made it grow better, was able to double yield
3 of 13
What was the green revolution?
The increased yield of plants due to greater knowledge of plants and breeding etc
4 of 13
Why do we need to accelerate agriculture productivity?
Because of the growing population we need to produce 2X the amount of yield than we are doing now otherwise the amount of fertile land per head will drop by 10X in 40 years
5 of 13
What re the 4 leading causes of decreased agriculture productivity acceleration?
Population growth, urbanisation, loss of soil, climate change
6 of 13
How much will climate change affect the crop yields?
Yields will drop 3-5% with every 1 degree temperature increase
7 of 13
How can genetic engineering help with drought issues?
Altering a single gene can increase drought tolerance
8 of 13
Wha are limitations of using fertilisers?
They are energy demanding to make, they are made from non-renewable resources (potassium and phosphate)
9 of 13
What are perennial plants?
Plants that are found to take up water and nutrients better than most plants, scientists are trying to crossbreed them with crops to reduce dependency on fertilisers
10 of 13
How can plant biology be used to address malnutrition?
Created plants such as golden rice and purple tomatoes which have fortified nutrients etc
11 of 13
What are Crassulacean acid metabolism plants? (CAM plants)
Plants that are adapted to the desert, they use a special kind of photosynthesis, CAM plants have the highest productivity and only requires 1/5 of the water as normal crop plants
12 of 13
What are CAM plants being used for?
Hopefully going to be applied to make biofuels that use CAM photosynthesis
