Inflammation of the meninges
(the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord)

Bacterial

Symptoms of meningitis
Fever
Neck stiffness
Headache
Rash that doesn't fade

Drowsiness

Brudzinski's sign
Kernig's sign

What is Brudzinski sign
When the patient is lying down on their back
If the neck is flexed, the hip and knees also flex

What is Kernig's sign
When the patient is lying down on their back
The knee cannot be straightened when the hip is flexed at 90 degrees

Pharmacological intervention for meningitis
Benzypenecillin
Paracetamol for fever

BENZYLPENECILLIN
Antibiotic
Dose: 10yr+ 1.2g, 9yr 600mcg
Presentation: 1.2g or 600mcg powder
1.2g mixed with 20ml, 600mcg mixed with 10ml
IV or IM

ATMIST to ED as this is a medical emergency

What is meningococcal septicaemia?
Sepsis caused by meningococcal disease
Bloodstream infection

Symptoms of meningococcal septicaemia
Fever
Nausea / vomiting
Cold hands or feet
Discoloured / pale skin
Reddish / purple non blanching rash (late stage)
Tachycardia
Diarrhoea

Benzylpenecillin
Paracetamol
ATMIST to ED
