Menstrual Phase
(Days 1-5): Uterus sheds it's inner lining of soft tissue and blood vessels which exits the vagina in the form of menstrual fluid. FSH levels are high until oestrogen is produced which inhibits FSH production and leads to LH production

Follicular Phase Pt 1
(Days 1-13): Hypothalamus produces GnRH. Pituitary responds by secreting FSH and LH which results in the stimulation of egg cells in the ovaries growing.

Follicular Phase Pt 2
One of these eggs begins to mature in a sac-like structure called a follicle. It takes 13 days for the egg to reach maturity. The follicle secretes oestrogen = uterus develops the endometrium.

Follicle -> Corpus luteum; produces lots of oestrogen and progesterone.

Ovulation Phase
(Day 14): Pituitary produces a large amount of LH = Release of matured egg cell. Egg enters fallopian tubes via cilia of the fimbriae. With an increase in hormones; Hypothalamus decreases GnRH to anterior pituitary = No FSH or LH produced.

Luteal Phase Pt 1
(Days 15-28): Egg released stays in fallopian tubes for 24 hours (No sperm = disintegration of egg; No Corpus luteum = Oestrogen and Progesterone levels decrease) When levels of O+P are low menstruation occurs.

Luteal Phase Pt 2
Message is then sent to the hypothalamus that hormone levels are low. This starts the cycle again with the secretion of GnRH.
