Network protocols

?
What is a protocol? (2 marks)
A set of rules for how devices communicate and how data is transmitted across a network
1 of 27
What is data sent between layers split into?
Packets
2 of 27
What is a layer?
A group of protocols which have similar functions
3 of 27
What are the four layers of the TCP/IP model? (4 marks)
Application layer, Transport layer, Internet layer, Link layer
4 of 27
What are the five protocols in the application layer? (5 marks)
HTTP, FTP, SMTP, HTTPS, IMAP
5 of 27
What are the two protocols in the transport layer? (2 marks)
TCP, UDP
6 of 27
What is the protocol in the internet layer?
IP
7 of 27
What are the two protocols in the link layer? (2 marks)
Wi-Fi, Ethernet
8 of 27
What does the application layer do? Give an example: (2 marks)
It provides networking devices to applications e.g. It turns data into websites
9 of 27
What does the transport layer do? (3 marks)
It sets up communications between two devices/splits data into packets/checks packets are correctly sent and delivered
10 of 27
What does the internet layer do? What is it used by? (4 marks)
It adds IP addresses to data packets/directs them between devices/handles traffic. Used by routers
11 of 27
What does the link layer do? Give an example: (3 marks)
It passes data over the physical network/is responsible for how data is sent as electrical signals over cables, wireless and other hardware/e.g. NICs
12 of 27
Give an advantage of using layers:
-It breaks network communication into manageable pieces, helping developers concentrate on one area of the network without having to worry about others/-Layers are self-contained so they can be changed without other layers being affected

What does HTTP stand for?
Hyper text Transfer Protocol
14 of 27
What does HTTPS stand for?
HTTP Secure
15 of 27
What does FTP stand for?
File Transfer Protocol
16 of 27
What does IMAP stand for?
Internet Message Access Protocol
17 of 27
What does SMTP stand for?
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
18 of 27
What is HTTP used for?
To access websites and communicate with web servers
19 of 27
What is HTTPS used for?
The same as HTTP, but it encrypts all information sent and received
20 of 27
What is FTP used for?
To access, edit and move files between devices on a network
21 of 27
What is IMAP used for?
To retrieve emails from a server
22 of 27
What is SMTP used for?
To send emails and transfer them between servers
23 of 27
What does TCP do? (3 marks)
It establishes a connection between sending and receiving devices/splits the data into numbered packets/communicates with receiving device to make sure all packets have been transferred correctly
24 of 27
What does UDP do?
It breaks the data down into packets without numbering them/It sends each packet once but doesn't check with the receiving device that everything has been received
25 of 27
When would TCP be used?
When a reliable connection is needed e.g. downloading files
26 of 27
When would UDP be used?
For fast, efficient transmission e.g. live video streaming
