Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)

Chemical energy stored as a high energy compound in the body. Only usuable source of energy. It is stored directly in the muscles and can supply energy for up to 3 seconds.

Breaking down ATP

Broken by the enzyme ATPase, it releases potential energy exothermically stored within the high energy bonds to provide energy for muscular contractions. It is broken down into ADP + P + energy.

Kinetic energy

Energy in the form of joint movement.

Exothermic

Chemical reaction that releases energy.

Endothermic

Chemical reaction that requires energy to be added for it to take place.

Coupled reaction

Products from one reaction, such as energy, are then used in another reaction.

ATP resynthesis

Breakdown of ATP into ADP is a reversible reaction. It requires energy endothermically from one of the energy systems to resynthesise ADP back into ATP, via coupled reactions.
