Sehr rasch. Somewhat calmer. Expressive use of tempo. Aprox 100-108 bpm. Begins in and is mostly 3/4 with 2/4 and 4/4 bits. Cross-rhythms. Syncopation. Demisemis, minims.

Atonal. Fragmentation of melody. Varied through inversion and rhythmic augmentation. Klangfarbenmelodie. Extremes of register. Disjunct. Short, fragmented, distinct melodies. H and N.

Large post- Romantic orch (quadruple woodwind, large brass, percussion (xylo, cymb, tam tam, bass drum) and strings). Full to sparse. Full pitch range. Techniques- glissando trombones, mutes, cymbal bowed and hit with mallet, arco, tremolo.
