Physics P1 5.5 Wave properties: diffraction.

?
What is diffraction?
Diffraction is the spreading out of waves when they pass through a gap or round the edge of an obstacle.
1 of 10
How does the width of the gap affect the diffraction?
The narrower the gap the greater the diffraction.
2 of 10
What happens if radio waves do not diffract enough when they go over hills?
Radio and TV reception will be poor.
3 of 10
What kind of waves is diffraction a property of?
All waves, including light and sound.
4 of 10
When is the diffraction of waves most noticeable?
If the wavelengths of the waves is about the same size as the gap or the obstacle.
5 of 10
How are TV signals carried?
By radio waves.
6 of 10
What may happen to radio and TV signal of people living in hilly areas?
Radio waves will be diffracted round the hill and if they son not diffract enough the radio and TV signal will be poor.
7 of 10
Why don't we often observe the diffraction of light during everyday life?
Because the wavelength of light is very short.
8 of 10
What sort of waves are diffracted?
All waves are diffracted.

**IF YOU ARE DRAWING A DIAGRAM TO SHOW DIFFRACTION MAKE SURE THAT THE WAVELENGTH OF THE WAVES STAYS THE SAME**
**LOOK UP DIAGRAMS OF DIFFRACTION OF WAVES BY A WIDE AND NARROW GAP**
