Physics P2 3.4 Momentum.

?
In addition to kinetic energy, what do all moving objects have?
Momentum.
1 of 13
What is the momentum of an object relative to?
Its mass and velocity, the greater the mass and the greater the velocity of an object, the greater its momentum.
2 of 13
What equation can be used to calculate momentum?
p = m x v.
3 of 13
In the equation to calculate momentum, what is p?
The momentum in kilogram metres per second (kg m/s).
4 of 13
In the equation to calculate momentum, what is m?
The mass in kilograms (kg).
5 of 13
In the equation to calculate momentum, what is v?
The velocity in metres per second (m/s).
6 of 13
What is the momentum when objects interact?
Whenever objects interact, the total momentum before the interaction is equal to the total momentum afterwards, provided no external forces act on them.
7 of 13
Whenever objects interact, the total momentum before the interaction is equal to the total momentum afterwards, providing no external forces act on them, what is this called?
The conservation of momentum. Another way to say this is that the total change in momentum is zero.
8 of 13
What could the interaction of two objects be ?
A collision or an explosion, after a collision the objects may move off together or they may move apart.
9 of 13
What is the unit of momentum?
kg m/s (you may also see this written as Ns).
10 of 13
When do objects have momentum?
When they are moving.
11 of 13
What is the momentum of a 1000 kg car travelling at 30m/s?
30 000 kg m/s.

**REMEMBER THAT MOMENTUM HAS A SIZE AND A DIRECTION**
