Why do some people reject the Secularisation thesis?
They argue religion is changing rather than declining. The changes we see are as a result of the changes in wider society. e.g. greater individualism and consumerism and the sift from modern to post modern society

For her religion is not declining it is taking a different, more privatised form. She argues we now have 'believing without belonging'

What does DAVIE mean by 'Believing without belonging'?
People still hold religious values but do not attend church as it is through choice now rather than obligation.

1) The British Social attitudes survey from 1983-2000 show a decline in belief as well as attendance. 2) Bruce argues if people are unwilling to invest time in going to church it reflects the declining strength of their belief

People have more choice and thus have become consumers of religion. Religion is now indiidualised and people adopt beliefs to give their lives meaning and to what fits with their interests. Thus, religion is a spiritual journey we choose to explore

Globalisation - society is more interconnected, time and space become compressed so we have instant access to beliefs that were previously remote

Disembedded real, local churches and relocated it on the internet and TV. This allows believers to express faith without actually attending.

'Jesus in Disneyland' a harvest day crusade was held not in church but at disneyland. Religion has become detached from its place in religious institutions.

Religious consumers - making conscious choices about which elements of religion they find useful

What is an effect of religious consumerism ?
there is a loss of faith in meta-narratives or a worldview that claims the absolute truth. These claims of truth are weakened by various and compelling versions of the truth.

What is an evaluative point of postmodernism ?
research suggests that people choose programmes that support their existing beliefs, so it unlikely that religious media attracts new members. The idea of the electronic church isnt based on evidence so we cant measure how many people take part.
