What are the two things that rate of heat transfer depend on?
Surface area and volume and the type of material
1 of 6
What type of materials transfer energy faster?
Objects made from good conductors (see page 20) transfer heat energy more quickly than insulating materials e.g. plastics
2 of 6
where is the heat energy from an object radiated from?
Heat energy is radiated from the surface of an object. The bigger the surface area, the more infrared waves that can be emitted from (or absorbed by) the surface- so the quicker the transfer of heat.
3 of 6
Give an everyday example of something that is good at transferring heat.
radiators have larger surface areas to maximise the amount of heat energy they transfer
4 of 6
. If two objects at the same temperature have the same surface area but different volumes, which object will cool quickest?
the object with the smaller volume will cool more quickly- as a higher proportion of the object will be in contact with its surroundings
5 of 6
what else could affect the rate of heat transfer except surface area and volume and type of material?
If an object is in contact with a conductor, the heat will be conducted away much faster than if it is in contact with a good insulator
