Freeze- Frame
During an improvisation or the playing of the scene, the instruction 'freeze' is given and the performers have to hold their positions.

Flashback
Gaining an understanding of the character's behavior, emotions and attitude. The backstory to the character.

Deeper understanding of the character/role. Asked questions about the character and their situation.

Using a ladder the actor must decide on their line to go up or down depending on their authority. To explore status, hierarchy and power.

Melodrama
To identify the strongest emotion in the scene, and then mime the scene using exaggerated movement for the chosen movement.

An exercise to explore status of the roles of characters. Ranks their role within defined terms such as social standing or economic prosperity.

Role Reversal
The actors reverse the roles they are portraying to gain a different view or understanding of their own role.

Volume Line
Getting louder or quieter depending on the scene. To see what works well vocally and what doesn't. Explore the meaning of the character and their situation.

Allows the inner thoughts of a character to be heard aloud.

A technique used to see how a character might react or behave in different social situations, locations or time.

Valley of Giants
The actor pretends he is a giant and reacts as if he is much bigger than anything else on the stage. This will help with elevated status or physical intimidation.

Universal language
Actors rehearse the scene using no dialogue, only using universally recognized sounds such as cries or laughter.
