A 'holy man' who apparently healed the Tsar's son. This lead to him being involved in the politics. Also known for womanising and drunkness, which damaged Tsar's reputation.

The government had raised taxes to pay for the war effort. Money was almost worthless by 1917.

Taken over by transporting men and food to those at war plus fuel shortages. The countryside had a lack of men due to conscription so supplies of food also fell.

Struggling to survive and meet their everday needs. Angry and striked against employers.

Many deserted, many died from casulties, and didnt have any heart to fight on.

What happened in the war effort?
Initially popular, but lost hope once many Russian lives were lost. Didn't like the taxation war caused. 1.5 million desertations.

Why did the Tsar join the war effort?
In an effort to bring up morale, joins in 1915. Some saw it as heroic, but had little intelligence of war and blamed more so for the failure. Left Rasputin to be MORE involved in politics back in Petrograd.
