What is a Genocide?
The deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular nation or ethnic group (minority).

800,000 - about 100,000 killed in the first two weeks

How did the Hutus kill?
Massacre, used machetes and guns. Radio stations told Hutus to eliminate Tutsis. They killed 5x faster than the Nazis.

Why was response so slow?
Many democrats around the world, particularly in the USA, refused to call the killings a 'genocide' as they would have to get involved. They didn't want to due to the 'Black Hawk' incident in Somalia the year before.

What was Rwanda like before the Genocide?
Began in 1994, population of 7 million, of which 85% were Hutu and 14% were Tutsi

What happened in Somalia in 1993?
American helicopter - 'Black Hawk' - shot down during the conlfict and the American soldiers were embarrassed and multilated.
