How is schizophrenia diagnosed?
There are two classifications that are used - World Health Organisation's International Classification of Disease (ICD-10) and Amercian Psychiatric Society's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5).

What are the positive symptoms of schizophrenia?
Hallucinations - unusual sensory experiences and delusions - also known as paranoia.

What are the negative symptoms of schizophrenia?
Speech poverty - decrease in quality and/or quantity of speech and avoilition - lack of motivation for everyday life.

One evaluation of classification of schizophrenia? (Reliability)
Important measure of reliablity is inter-rater reliablity. Cheniaux - 2 psychiatrists diagnosed 100 patients using DSM & ICD. One diagnosed 26 and 44 and the other 13 and 24. Limitation of classification of schizophrenia.

One evaluation of classification of schizophrenia? (Validity)
To assess validity of diagnosis we can use critieron validity. Figures in Cheniaux study show that patients are more likely to be diagnosed using ICD than DSM. This shows poor validity.

One evaluation of classification of schizophrenia? (Cultural bias)
Studies have shown people of African American or Afro-Caribbean are 7 times more likely to be diagnosed with diesease. Rates in Africa aren't high and so this must be due to cultural bias.
