Goals must actually be within reach of achieving. Goals too far-fetched will cause demotivation when they are not achieved causing learn helplessness to occur, a psychological element that means the athlete begins to doubt themself.

Timing a goal prevents the athlete from getting bored and idling by putting slight pressure on the athlete to achieve the goal. However time limits must be a sensible time enough to allow the adaptation desired to take place.
