Goals should have a clear focus with a specific aim to to be achieved.

Measurable goals build more confidence and motivation when successful.

Aims set must be agreed as a necessary target as this creates the sense of responsibility for the individual’s own progress.

Realistic
Goals must actually be within reach of achieving. Goals too far-fetched will cause demotivation when they are not achieved causing learn helplessness to occur, a psychological element that means the athlete begins to doubt themself.

Time-Bound
Timing a goal prevents the athlete from getting bored and idling by putting slight pressure on the athlete to achieve the goal. However time limits must be a sensible time enough to allow the adaptation desired to take place.

A goal must be exciting to avoid boredom and lack of motivation occurring. Making goals exciting avoids ‘Tedium’ occurring. Exciting goals are those where variance and individual needs has been applied to ensure the athlete enjoys their training as m

The athlete should be able to assess their progress and evaluate so that goals can be adjusted if need be. Recording results maintains high levels of motivation and focus the athlete on where improvements need to be made.
