What is Functionalism?

A consensus theory, that believes that society is made up of institutions that rely on each other to allow society to successfully function.

What is the Organic Analogy?

Durkheims idea that society runs like a hum,an body. Meaning that all organs work together to successfully maintain the health of the human body and if any of the functions stop working, then society as a whole and all other institution are affected.

What is Marxism?

A conflict theory, that believes we live in a capitalist society made up of the Bourgeoisie and the Proletariat (social classes).

What is the Bourgeoisie?

The ruling class. They were the minority, but had most wealth and power.

What is the Proletariat?

The working class. They were the majority, but had little power and little money.

What is Feminism?

A conflict theory, that says that society is patriarchal and women are oppressed by men.

What is a radical feminist?

Someone who believes that society is structured to oppress women. Believe that in order to achieve equality, men and women should be fully separated and have nothing to do with each other.

What is a liberal feminist?

Someone who wants equal rights and opportunities. Believe oppression is becoming gradually overcome, but not fast enough.

What is a marxist feminist?

Someone that believes that the main reason for oppression is because of capitalism, not men.

What is personal life perspective?

Interactionist approach. A bottom-up theory, saying that family affects society. In order to understand society, we must look at the meanings and actions of individuals (rather than large societal structures) and how these shape their relationships.

What is an Interactionist approach?

The behaviour of individuals and the interaction between them , determine how society works.

What is The New Right perspective?

Claims that men and women should take traditional roles in the family (breadwinner and housewife) to ensure successful socialisation for society.

What is the postmodernist perspective?

Say that society is no longer ordered and structured in the same way it used to be.
