The past cannot be repeated, we must move forward. Tom want's to stay in the past when he was relevant and without the threat of new money west egg and gatsby wants to repeat the past but retaining his current status.

Written in the 1920's. term american dream wasn't coined until the late 1930s. The 20's were the 'roaring twenties' a time of great opulence in America where new money people were on the rise due to getting rich off speakeasies.

Gatsby represents the idea of the american dream. Reinvents himself with a more glamours name. However we get insight into Fitzgerlads opinion on the American dream as gatsby can only achieve this through illegitimate means.

Gatsby's parties are a symbol of freedom, and escapism from the real world, he provides a fantasy, he lives in fantasy. 'the carnivalesque' Again, this links back to the American dream, allowing any guest to live the American dream for the night.
