Chapter one
We are told that Nick has moved back to the Midwest and that he is going to tell a retrospective story. He goes for dinner with Tom and Daisy where he meets Jordan. Dinner is interrupted by a phone call from Tom's mistress. He sees Gatsby.

Chapter two
We meet George and Myrtle. Tom, Nick and Myrtle go to New York. There is a party and Nick gets drunk. Tom breaks Myrtle's nose.

Chapter three
Nick goes to one of Gatsby's parties. Him and Jordan meet Owl Eyes in the library. Nick finally meets Gatsby by accident. He comments on what he has written so far.

Chapter four
Gatsby visits Nick. They go for lunch and Nick meets Wolfshiem. Gatsby and Tom are introduced. Jordan tells Nick about Daisy and Gatsby's relationship.

Chapter five
Gatsby meets Daisy at Nick's house and whilst they talk Nick wanders in the garden. Nick returns to the room and realizes Daisy has been crying. Gatsby takes Nick and Daisy for a tour of his house.

Chapter six
We are told about Gatsby's past. Tom visits Gatsby's house. Tom and Daisy attend one of Gatsby's parties. Gatsby is upset that Daisy has not enjoyed the party.

Chapter seven
Nick, Gatsby, Jordan, Daisy and Tom all have lunch then go to New York. They take a room at the plaza where a fight breaks out between Tom and Gatsby. Daisy hits Myrtle in Gatsby's car and kills her. Tom and Nick find out.

Chapter eight
Gatsby tells Nick how he first met Daisy. Tom tells Wilson that it was Gatsby who killed Myrtle. Wilson goes to Gatsby's house, shoots him then kills himself.

Chapter nine
Nick is mistaken for Gatsby during a phonecall, giving an insight into his bootlegging career. Gatsby's father arrives and him, Nick and Owl Eyes are the only ones who attend his funeral. Nick leaves West Egg because of the memories there.
