When you reach ??yrs old how much REM sleep do you get?
when you reach 70 - 80 years old you only get 10% REM sleep

How long do babies sleep for and how long are their sleep cycles?
babies sleep for around 16 hours a day in 90 minute cycles
3 of 21
How much sleep does an average adult get each night?
8 hours
4 of 21
What are adults more likely to suffer from?
sleep disorders
5 of 21
What do teenagers suffer from?
phase delay
6 of 21
what do 60 year olds suffer from?
phase advance
7 of 21
What is a relevant IDA point for this explanation?
socially sensitive
8 of 21
why is it socially sensitive?
it states that teenagers need more sleep and as a result shouldnt wake up early. there should therefore be unrefutable and peer reviewed evidence for this statement.
9 of 21
What are the three pieces of evidence?
sleep in babies, sleep in teens and sleep in older people
10 of 21
what did the sleep in babies research find?
that the high level of REM sleep experienced by babies helps their brain grow and helps them become more organised, as they are constantly learning.
11 of 21
What does this research explain?
it explains why people need less sleep as they get older, you dont learn as much when your older. however it would be reasonable to suggest that an adult with amnesia would have more REM sleep.
12 of 21
what did the research into sleep in teens find?
high school students got on average 7.3 hours sleep, 1/4 were getting 6.5 or less. students who got more A grades slept one hour longer each night than students with lower grades.
13 of 21
what does this research show?
that sleep is good for cognition, such as focus and memory. it ties in well with the restoration theory it demonstrates increased core sleep (REM/5) results in increased psychological recovery.
14 of 21
what did the research into sleep in older people find?
overall that stage 3 and 4 sleep declines with age, young people who suffer from senile dementia also have little stage 3 and 4 sleep.
15 of 21
what does this suggest about stage 3 and 4 sleep?
that they are linked with memory and that by having stage 4 sleep you may be able to reduce your chances of developing dementia.
16 of 21
What is an issue with the research?
some older people have very good memory but have little stage 3 and 4 sleep.
17 of 21
What is good with the teen research? (AO3)
the results were consistent and therefore fairly conclusive.
18 of 21
What was an issue with the older people research? (AO3)
some results were inconsistent, this was due to individual differences and extraneous variables, there was little control and therefore no cause and effect can be established.
19 of 21
Was WEBBS data consistent? (wider evaluation)
it was consistent for the same ppt on different nights but not consistent across ppts - even when the ppts were drawn from the same age group.
20 of 21
what does this mean about the research? (wider evaluation)
we cannot generalise across age groups due to individual differences.
