SRRRS AO1
Holmes and Rahe: 5,000 patient records, 43 common life events. given life change units with marriage (50) being a reference.
Higher the score, the more stressors, more susceptible to illness
1 of 12
SRRS AO3 (different meanings)
Dohrenend et al: "serious illness or injury" was interpreted differently by ptpts. Divorces could be positive if bad marriage. Fixed LCU number is unrepresentative and effects validity. However other adaptations done "ball rolling"
2 of 12
SRRS AO3 (controllable vs uncontrollable)
Stem et al: did the SRRS but added controllable and uncontrollable. Uncontrollable events were reliable predictors of illness. SRRS cannot reliably predict who will and wont become ill.
3 of 12
SCR AO1
tonic conductance- before stress
phasic conductance- after stress
4 of 12
SCR AO3 (social desirability)
Objective measure as they measure something that is out of ptpts control. Doesnt have social desirability bias. However sympathetic arousal.
5 of 12
SCR AO3 (cognitive element)
Stress has a strong psychological element. Speisman found students got more stressed over what they perceived to be gruesome medical procedures. Stress decreased when its perceived as joyful.
6 of 12
AO3 (objective measure)
SCR is objective and avoids social desirability bias. However they may not be immune from the influence of the ptpt. Sympathetic arousal can cause sweating etc. Fear, anger etc can cause it. Still has present extraneous variables.

Personality types AO1
Friedman and Roseman: Type A: competitive, urgent and hostile
Type B: Relaxed, tolerant, reflective
Type C: Passive, self sacrificing repress emotions
8 of 12
Studies for personality types.
Friedman and Roseman: 3,000 men interviewed to assess personality
12% of Type A people developed CHD
6% of Type B got CHD
Type A had higher blood pressure, 2x more died of cardio illness.
9 of 12
Personality AO3 (supporting evidence)
Edigo et al: 150 men and women, stroke sufferers most likely to be Type A
10 of 12
Personality AO3 (all behaviours affecting CHD)
Myrtek found association between hostility and CHD alone. Other than that, there was no association with Type A and CHD. A cluster of characteristics isnt what causes CHD.
11 of 12
Personality AO3 (gender bias)
Initial study only used men. We know that genders deal with stress differently, studies findings are gender biased. However Friedman et al: 800 men and women. Treatment group (given cardiac counselling and Type A counselling) 15% less likely to get CHD.
