Up until 1890, the US had mainly been isolationist with people unwilling to interfere in foreign affairs.

The US realised that from its growing market economy, it needed to control its markets overseas.

What were the motives of imperialism?
Most of the motives behind US imperialism was expansionism. Roosevelt was a big promoter for expansionism too.

Was there opposition to imperialism?
There was some opposition from people who had more traditional and defensive ideas of US foreign policy.

What was the Monroe Doctrine?
This was a US policy in 1823 which opposed any European influence in America in the 1800's.

What were the actual causes for imperialism?
- Modernisation of Japan worried the US in looking after its interests of the Pacific, China's instability led to US involvement in the Far East, worries of Asia increased when tension grew in the West due to fear of Chinese + Japanese immigration

People had to accept that US foreign policy was reaching a major turning point.

SAW - why did it begin?
A Cuban revolt rose against Spanish rule and the US had support to intervene because they sympathised with Cuban nationals.

SAW - what happened?
USS Maine warship blew up whilst in port of Havana, and so this gave an ideal justification to US wishes to go to war. It was seen by the US as a Spanish provocative for war.

SAW - aftermath
US gained a swift victory and Roosevelt resigned his post and ensured that there was media coverage of his 'heroic' acts. He also brought in the 'Rough Riders' to ensure this.

Opinion of the war
If Cuba had been the only reason to join the was, the US could have been seen as only protecting the Monroe Doctrine. However, the annexation of the Philippines, Hawaii, Guam and the Pacific became American colonies. A wave of imperialism hit the US.
