What are the 3 phases of pattern of growth for a natural population?
Slow growth; rapid growth; stable state, no growth (may be fluctuation due to changes in food supply, etc)
1 of 8
Why cant no population grow indefinitely?
Certain factors limit growth such as food, light, water and shelter.
2 of 8
What are biotic factors?
Factors concerned with the activities of living organisms (e.g. competition + predation)
3 of 8
What are abiotic factors?
Factors concerned with the non living part of the environment.
4 of 8
How does temperature affect population size?
Each species has an optimum temperature at which is best to be able to survive. Further away from this optimum, the smaller the population. E,G, ENZYMES AND BODY TEMP.
5 of 8
How does light affect population size?
More light = more photosynthesis = faster growth rate in plants = more plants = more animals feeding
6 of 8
How does pH affect population size?
Affects the action of enzymes; larger pop when appropriate pH exists
7 of 8
How does water and humidity affect population size?
No water = small pops which consist of well adapted species. Humidity affects transpiration rates; dry air conditions = species adapted to tolerate will be larger.
