Persistent fissure eruption, large amounts of basaltic lava build up horizontal plains. E.g. Deccan/ Columbia plateau.
1 of 6
Vulcanian eruptions.
Violent gas eruptions blast out cool, sticky lava. Fragments build up into ash pumice. Occur when viscous solidifying rapidly after an explosion.
2 of 6
Hawaiian eruptions.
More central activity than Icelandic ones. Runny, basaltic lava travels down sides in flows.
3 of 6
Strombolian eruptions.
Frequent gas explosions blasting runny lava fragments to form cones in the air. Very explosive with pyroclastic rock thrown out and marked by white cloud of stream from crater.
4 of 6
Vesuvian eruptions.
Powerful blasts of gas pushing ash clouds high into sky. More violent than vulcanian eruptions with lava flow and ash covering surrounding areas.
5 of 6
Plinian Eruption.
Gas rushes up through sticky lava and blasts ashes/fragments in hug explosion. Violent eruptions create immense gas clouds and volcanic debris several km thick. Gas clouds and lava can also rush down slopes, part of volcano maybe blasted away.
